Your New Puppy

To our customers,

Life at Eshabeta II

Puppies born at Eshabeta II are born in the main house and live there until they are approximately 3 weeks old. At that time puppies and mother go outside where they live in a large covered run, with their own heated building. Puppies are turned loose every day to socialize. The property which Eshabeta II is located on is totally fenced, therefore the pups are protected at all times, they never see or feel a car go by, see no strangers and experience no "city" noise. There are no children here so when the puppies come into the house in groups or by themselves adults are all they see and interact with. Eshabeta II gives the puppies a quiet start in life.

If you have children or other pets the interaction between the new puppy and children/pets must be monitored. Well meaning children can over traumatize or due bodily harm to a puppy, other pets can also be the same way. This puppy has no defense against harm except you, so needs your adult supervision until at least 6 months of age. Remember this is a baby and needs special attention no different than a human baby.

PLEASE REMEMBER - that when your puppy comes to your house, everything is new, different, and possibly frightening for the puppy. Introduce new experiences slowly, do not overwhelm your puppy, and do not rush your puppy into accepting its new life all at once. Example: once your puppy’s shots are complete at 16 weeks, you and the puppy go for a walk and a car passes and you notice that the pup seems nervous or frightened. Do not become upset with your pup, there is nothing wrong except the pup has never experienced the sound, smell, motion and feel. A puppy can feel the vibration of the car even if you cannot. Show your pup by taking this new experience confidently that this is nothing abnormal or frightening. Give your puppy time to build trust in you. This puppy has just been taken away from everything and everyone it knows, taken a scary plane ride, and while you are excited, happy, and thrilled to have your new puppy, he or she should take it slowly at first.

What to Expect from Your New Fila Puppy

Diarrhea is commonly caused by stress. The flight is noisy and vibrates. The puppy is used to being with mom, brothers and sisters and living in quiet seclusion on a farm. If your puppy has diarrhea upon arrival give it Imodium AD – ½ tsp. 4 times per day, 3 hours apart for 2 days.

Filas are bred for aversion to strangers known as "Ojeriza". You own the puppy now but the puppy does not know this so you are a stranger. Give the puppy about 3 days to 2 weeks to adjust to you, your family and your new environment. The puppy may seem "'skitterish" at first, this is normal. Filas learn to trust you. It is not automatic.

Be careful disease is everywhere. Parvo, for example, lives in dirt for up to 5 years so don't walk your puppy in public places and don't let people pat your puppy then put their hands in their mouths. Do not put the puppy down on the floor at the vet’s office. The vet is where sick dogs are taken. Don't take the puppy to parks, dog obedience classes or any of the above until all shots are complete.

Your puppy may go off its food. This is a response to stress and usually lasts for 3 or 4 days. Your puppy may seem dehydrated when it arrives looking gaunt. This too will disappear when your puppy is back on a "familiar" lifestyle - yours. Be patient. Please read the page on crate training it works great and is a wonderful tool. Later on this will prove useful when guests come and are afraid of your dog or you are wishing to keep your dog from socializing and want to keep friendly guests safe.

If you can stick to a similar feeding program it will help with the transition. Do not get your pup too fat, this can cause harm to joints and is also the cause of problems in adult dogs. Feed quality food and keep it interesting by supplementing with canned food, cooked race diet and/or table scraps etc. added to base diet, also vitamin C supplements are recommended. We use Peak Condition as an additive when extra care is desired.

bulletOrganic remedy for diarrhea - Boil until soft the following: equal amounts of white potato and sweet potato, a piece of leek and piece of turnip.  Drain water and add to chicken or turkey meat (chopped or ground).

Fila Brasileiro Environmental Temperature Requirements

Summer: Keep the environment between 45 to 85 degrees. Always provide fresh water and shade. NEVER take your dog with you and leave it in the car. If the windows are down, someone could try to touch, tease, or pet your dog etc., and could be bitten. If the windows are up your dog will die from being overheated, the same is true even if the windows are open a crack, they will be TOO HOT on even a "warm" day. If your home has A/C leave the dog home crated or uncrated depending on age of the dog, training, and how long you will be gone etc.

Winter: Keep your Fila warm - 45 degrees or above. Filas have very little hair and may become hypothermic easily. If you and your dog/s are doing activities in the snow or cold weather it is alright for your dog if it is not old, young, or in poor health. The dog at rest is at risk for being chilled. For example sleeping outdoors at night. Do NOT if it is cold (below 45 degrees).

You must either purchase heat mats for the sleeping area or heat lamps. This suggestion is not my favorite due to power failures that can put Filas at risk in cold weather. Ideally keep your dog in the house at night so he/she can watch over you in comfort and safety.

You can crate-train your dog/puppy until it is old enough to have good "house training skills" and is out of the puppy chew and play stage, then gradually allow the freedom of your home. So many people have misunderstood information which claims the Fila Brasileiro is an "any climate" adjustable dog. This is true only within the structure of common sense.

Socializing Tips

Here are some simple hints on socializing puppies after 16 weeks of age (shots are complete at 16 weeks):

Socialize your Fila Brasileiro by allowing your dog to go everywhere you can possibly take him/her. This will:

bullet

Build confidence in a variety of situations.

bullet

Strengthens the bond between the two of you.

bullet

Is a great opportunity to practice obedience.

bullet

Clarifies normal human interaction for the dog.  (DO NOT have people walk up to the puppy to pet it. If the puppy goes to them, pets are OK.)

For your information we feed our dogs:

bulletDry kibble - We recommend Eagle Dog Food, Eagle Holistic Select, Precise, Pinnacle, Canidae, Wellness Formula, PHD (Perfectly Healthy Diet), Innova, Back to Basics, Wysong, Flint River Ranch, Regal, Life's Abundance, Canidae, Natural Balance, Nature's Recipe - Working Group Formula.
dry kibble.  Use any that is 22% to 26% protein, 14% to 18% fat and contains NO SOY PRODUCTS,  and, Vitamin E as a preservative NO ETHOXEQUINDO NOT FEED PUPPY FOOD - ONLY ADULT FORMULAS!   Be sure your dry kibble is meat based not corn based.  I add Champagne Race Diet cooked food for the a.m. feeding (canned Pedigree has no soy), If you choose to feed canned dog food instead of cooking meat.  Half a can if feeding canned food or 1 cup of cooked meat.  SOY PROMOTES BLOAT!

bulletPRECISE ........ INNOVA.... CANIDAE...AND...  EAGLE ( ADULT FORMULAS ONLY) " WHAT WE RECOMMEND TO OUR CUSTOMERS TO FEED AS A BASE DRY KIBBLE" TO WHICH THEY SHOULD ADD MEAT/NEXT LEVEL (FOR THE FIRST 14 MONTHS) VITAMIN C (ALL THEIR LIVES) AND PEAK CONDITION DURING TIMES OF STRESS (PREGNANCY, DOG SHOWS, SURGERY, ILLNESS ETC)

bulletPlease read the labels on dog food you choose to feed, and we want you to cook REAL meat for your puppy/dog.  We do it here every day.  Chicken or hamburger can be purchased reasonably and it is easy to prepare. Simply put 1 cup of hamburger (enough chicken ( I use thighs fewer bones to remove)  to  NET between 1/2 cup and  1 cup of cooked  meat) in a dish w/ 1 cup of water and cook for 4 min.on Hi.  Let it cool and pour it over the dogs dry kibble about 3 cups of dry for a puppy under 12 weeks.  Increase the food quantity to the degree of consumption. Feed as much as they want to eat w/ out wasting large amounts of food. Dry food sours in about 1 hour so be sure to pick up and discard left overs. It is normal for dogs to fast themselves occasionally.  Watch for signs of poor health: diarrhea, vomiting, temp above 102, lethargy loss of weight or dull coat, distended abdomen.....if any of these symptoms are present w/ the  fasting or reduced intake of food be sure to take the  puppy/dog to the vet for an examination immediately.

"The Arthritis Solution for Dogs."

Bovine Cartilage
Bovine cartilage is high in glycosaminoglycans that can help the body repair damaged joints. In dogs treated with bovine cartilage, good results were seen in the treatment of degenerative disk disease and some spinal disorders. The recommended dose of bovine cartilage is 200mgs per 25 pounds of body weight.  Perna Canaliculus: Perna canaliculus, the green lipped mussel, is a shellfish that is a natural source of highly concentrated glycosaminoglycans (GAGS) including chondroitin, complex proteins, amino acids, nucleic acids,
chelated minerals, and an inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis that makes it effective as  an anti-inflammatory supplement. Glyco-Flex is one supplement made of perna mussels.

Sea Cucumber
The sea cucumber are marine animals related to urchins. They are believed to inhibit harmful prostaglandins involved in causing pain and arthritis. They are also rich in nutrients needed by cartilage, including chondroitin and mucopolysaccharides, and several vitamins and minerals. One product is the Sea Jerky treats made for dogs. The active ingredient was assumed to be chondroitin, but another substance called InflaStatin (now under research and development) is the active ingredient.

Shark Cartilage
Researchers have reported a link between blood vessel growth and the development of arthritis. In the joint fluid of arthritic pets, there is an increasing amount of a chemical called endothelial cell- stimulating angiogenic factor. This chemical encourages growth of new blood vessels in the arthritic joint. It is theorized that by inhibiting new blood vessel growth, further degeneration of cartilage might be prevented. In the laboratory, shark cartilage has been shown to contain chemicals that inhibit blood vessel formation. The dosage is 750mgs per 5kgs body weight.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate
Glucosamine is an amino-sugar that is incorporated into joint cartilage. It is supplied as a supplement in one of
three forms: glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride, or N-acetylglucosamine. Studies show that while all three forms are effective, glucosamine HCL and glucosamine sulfate were more effective that N-acetylglucosamine. Glucosamine is rapidly taken up by cartilage cells and helps stimulate the synthesis of joint fluid and cartilage and also helps inhibit the destructive enzymes that destroy cartilage and proteoglycans. The anti-inflammatory aspect of glucosamine may result from the scavenging of harmful free radicals similar to antioxidants. Glucosamine is used by the cartilage for the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans. Dosages vary depending on the product. A guidline for combination gluc/chon products is a starting dose of 1,000 to 1,500 mgs of glucosamine with 800 to 1,200 mgs of chondroitin per day for a 50-100 pound dog. The dose is lowered
after 4-8 weeks.

DMG:
DMG is dimethylglycine. Research indicates that DMG reduces the incidence of arthritis and allows for the reversal of the inflammatory condition of some experimental animals with arthritis. Dosage is 50-250mgs per day.

MSM:
Methylsulfonylmethane is a natural anti-inflammatory and analgesic. It is a stable metabolite of DMSO. MSM supplies sulfur to the body, which can be used in the treatment of osteoarthritis. MSM is found naturally in meat, fish, eggs, poultry, milk, and other foods. MSM is very safe and may help treat arthritis via an anti-inflammatory benefit and providing sulfur used by the cartilage in the healing process.

Cetyl Myristoleate:
Cetyl myristoleate is an ester of a common fatty acid commonly found in fish oils, dairy butter, and animal fat. It isn't clear how CM works, but it may act similarly to omega-3 fatty acids. Veterinarians using a product called Myristin in combination with Myristaid, which contains glucosamine, MSM, and other herbs and antioxidants, have reported success in dogs with osteoarthritis.

bullet Vitamin C - Until 6 months, feed 500 mg. of Vitamin C, after 6 months, feed 1000 mg. Vitamin C.

bulletWorm your adult (12 months - 12 years) Fila every 3-4 months!  Use heartworm medications if applicable to your area!

bullet

Feed free choice so the dog's stomach is never empty and they don't gulp meals (bloat).  Do not allow Filas to play after eating or drink for  at least 1 hour, preferably 2 hours (torsion).

The joints do not close until 14 months of age.  Do not allow your puppy to jump down from high places of run on hard surfaces.
