Fila Brasileiro Environmental Temperature RequirementsSummer: Keep the environment between 45 to 85 degrees. Always provide fresh water and shade. NEVER take your dog with you and leave it in the car. If the windows are down, someone could try to touch, tease, or pet your dog etc., and could be bitten. If the windows are up your dog will die from being overheated, the same is true even if the windows are open a crack, they will be TOO HOT on even a "warm" day. If your home has A/C leave the dog home crated or uncrated depending on age of the dog, training, and how long you will be gone etc. Winter: Keep your Fila warm - 45 degrees or above. Filas have very little hair and may become hypothermic easily. If you and your dog/s are doing activities in the snow or cold weather it is alright for your dog if it is not old, young, or in poor health. The dog at rest is at risk for being chilled. For example sleeping outdoors at night. Do NOT if it is cold (below 45 degrees). You must either purchase heat mats for the sleeping area or heat lamps. This suggestion is not my favorite due to power failures that can put Filas at risk in cold weather. Ideally keep your dog in the house at night so he/she can watch over you in comfort and safety. You can crate-train your dog/puppy until it is old enough to have good "house training skills" and is out of the puppy chew and play stage, then gradually allow the freedom of your home. So many people have misunderstood information which claims the Fila Brasileiro is an "any climate" adjustable dog. This is true only within the structure of common sense. |
