WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - The Wichita City Council this week takes up the thorny issue of whether to single out pit bulls in a new dangerous-dog ordinance.

Council members hold a workshop tomorrow to discuss whether to limit pit bull ownership to two per home and require sterilization and an implanted microchip.

City officials say the proposed pit bull-specific rules stem from a high rate of euthanization for the breed. But at least two council members and local dog groups say that all breeds should be treated equally in the new law.

The proposed law would label a dog dangerous if the animal acts aggressively, chases people or is deemed a threat by animal control officers.

Each case would have a hearing.
