Veterinarians against AB 1634

This morning, The Gilroy Dispatch  has an article featuring a local vet, Dr.
Pete Keesling, who submitted his opinion opposing AB 1634.
A major point he noted was that the CVMA , California Veterinary Medical
Associates, helped sponsor this bill.  The bill was done by CVMA's officers
without thorough consultation with the membership. "The endorsement does not
represent the consensus of many veterinarians as it implies.  For example,
the Monterey Bay Veterinary Medical Association voted 24-2 to ask CVMA to
rescind its co-sponsorship of AB1634."

Dr. Keesling also stated that, "Puppy mills in other states would thrive
because individuals and families looking for a new pet wouldn't have as many
sources from which to choose.  Hobby breeders, legitimate breeders who
belong to the AKC and breed their dogs for the betterment of their
individual bloodlines, would significantly decrease in numbers."  Dr.
Keesling goes on to describe how serious the health problems are and the
conditions of the puppy mills.  He lists  <http://www.endpuppymills.com>
www.endpuppymills.com as a site to view.  Another local veterinarian and
several vet techs went to an Arkansas puppy mill and filmed the poor
condition of dogs and the squalor in which they saw puppies housed.
This can be seen on the above website.

We do need to become more vocal on opposing this bill.  Speak to your
neighbors, family and friends about this bad legislation and encourage them
to contact their representatives in the State Assembly.
