This is my personal letter I'm sending to my MPP at both her Queen's Park and constitutency office.  Feel free to use it, or use it as a springboard for your own letter.  Snail mail is best!  Let's cover their desks!  I'm also taking a pawful of these as fill-in-and-mail letters to vets and pet stores, to see if they'll carry them.

Dear (name of your MPP):

Michael Bryant announced Thursday, February 3, 2005 that he intends to pursue the breed ban contained in Bill 132.  He made this announcement and the news was published while presenters were still before the Standing Committee on the Legislative Assembly.

The government has not presented any sound foundation for this proposed breed ban legislation.  Not one single sound fact. This proposed legislation is based on urban myth and emotion.

If a government enacts law based on emotion rather than fact and reason, and pursues its own agenda despite evidence and expert advice to the contrary, we do not have good government.  Quite the contrary.

An enlightened, intelligent government would enact all-breed dangerous dog legislation that would place responsibility where it belongs - on the irresponsible or criminal owner.  All-breed dangerous dog legislation that contains clear definitions of "vicious dog", "potentially dangerous dog" and "severe injury" and clear consequences would be effective, workable, efficient, cost effective, and the best choice for public safety.

Bill 132 does nothing to prevent tragedies by dogs of other breeds.  It does not define dangerous and potentially dangerous dogs.  The proposed legislation defines a pit bull as a pit bull terrier without specifying characteristics, and uses "menace", "bite" and "attack" without defining the terms, which makes enforcement of this proposed legislation arbitrary and dependent entirely on one person's opinion.

If you vote in favour of Bill 132, you will prove to the citizens of Ontario that the McGuinty government pursues its own agenda despite evidence and expert advice to the contrary, that it cares more for its agenda and press releases than for public safety.

Please vote against Bill 132 or absent yourself on the day of the vote on Bill 132.  Voting in favour of this Bill is voting against the best choice for public safety, and against good government.

Yours sincerely,
