Seattleites to vote on ban of fighting dogs

The Jan. 7 article "Pit-bull paradoxes: Sweet or Savage" left out some very pertinent facts about pit bulls in Seattle.

While discussing the increase in the number of registered pit bulls, the author did not mention that 80 percent of dogs are unlicensed, so there are likely to be many more pit bulls than the 1,505 figure quoted.

Secondly, the author did not mention the extreme danger that pit bulls other fighting breed pose to the uninsured and underinsured. Many of the owners of pit bulls do not have the wherewithal to pay the medical bills of people and dogs bitten by pit bulls. Homeowners insurance policies regularly put disclaimers on certain breeds. To my knowledge, only one insurance company, Allstate, will insure a pit bull. Many homeowners policies have a one bite per mortagage policy and once a dog has bitten, no insurance company will continue to insure that particular dog.

In addition, the author did not mention that Families and Dogs Against Fighting Breeds (FDAFB.org) is sponsoring a citizens initiative to ban fighting dog breeds in Seattle. The legislation will go before the voter at the next presidential election. The legislation is modeled after the United Kingdom's Dangerous Dog Act of 1991.
