Greenville, Mississippi

In other business, council members unanimously agreed upon a change to the city's pit bull ordinance Tuesday. The city adopted new rules last month regulating the confinement and muzzling of the dogs, which have earned a reputation for violence throughout the United States.

The new rule adds to the areas in which pit bulls must be on a leash and must be muzzled, and specifies areas the owner must avoid.

“The dog shall be muzzled in such a manner as to prevent it from biting or injuring any person or animal, and kept on a leash with the owner or custodian in attendance; provided however that no pit bull dog may be walked within 50 feet of any public school ground, playground or park, nor enter into such school ground, play ground or park.”

Last month, the City Council unanimously adopted the punishment for failure to confine a pit bull. The first offense will cost $500; subsequent offenses will bring a fine of $1,000 and 30 days in jail. The council also set the fee at $500 for failure to register a pit bull.
